SIM multiple networks will break the IoT deadlock

2021-12-31

With the development of the Internet of Things, all walks of life have benefited from the connection of Internet of Things devices. From wearable devices that track heart rate, blood pressure and other health indicators, the Internet of Things can be said to have entered all aspects of our lives.

However, due to many IoT devices nowadays, the SIM installed in the device component is connected to a 2G or 3G network to realize real-time data transmission between people and objects. Once the 2G or 3G network support is lost, this IoT device will face shutdown.

Some people say to replace 4G, but we must first face a problem, that is, the components supporting 2G or 3G network are completely different from the technology of SIM supporting 4G network. The uncertainty of 4G infrastructure has caused the development of the Internet of Things market to stagnate. On the surface, it will not cause problems for various industries, but many companies have announced that they will shut down 2G networks by 2025, which means many IoT devices face the risk of losing connectivity within the next five years.

So why are they stuck in this deadlock? Why don’t companies invest in new 4G equipment? Mainly because the cost of 4G technology can be up to three times the cost of 2G, so most capitalists are more willing to choose cheap 2G technology.

A few days ago, Paul Craig, head of Internet of Things at American Semiconductor (OV), predicted that multi-network SIM cards will break the deadlock in the Internet of Things market in 2022. Multi-network providers work differently from a single mobile network operator (MNO). Since a multi-network SIM cooperates with multiple communication service providers, it can maintain the connection as long as it ensures that there is a network at the location of the device.

It is believed that in 2022, multi-network SIM will be used in the Internet of Things one after another, breaking the deadlock in the development of the Internet of Things, and promoting the new development of the Internet of Things industry in 2022. Although we cannot predict when 2G and 3G networks will be shut down, multi-network SIM will become a long-term solution to the shutdown of communication networks.
